Elderly Left in Freezing Cold at Trump Rally

Emergency news coverage noticed by Burr

Too dangerous for obvious metaphors

From the Omaha World-Herald:

Hundreds of people waited hours in the cold for buses after Trump rally at Eppley

Hundreds of people who attended President Donald Trump’s Eppley Airfield rally Tuesday evening in Omaha spent up to three hours in freezing temperatures waiting for buses to take them back to their cars.

Several people who were waiting required medical attention, based on reporting at the scene and local emergency scanner traffic. Douglas County dispatchers and Airport Authority Police said they had no immediate tally.

The president, who spoke for nearly an hour, wrapped up shortly before 9 p.m. Some people in his audience waited until after midnight for campaign buses to take them to their cars, which were parked miles away.

Walking out of the rally, The World-Herald saw two people receive help from Omaha police — an elderly woman who was warming up in the back of a police cruiser and a boy to whom an officer lent a blanket.

After COVID: Normal, or Trump Normal? How About a Return to Decency?

found online by Raymond

Normal after COVID-19     [Image from Channel 4 News]

From JoAnn Williams:

Science and a vaccine will determine what a post-pandemic normal looks like.

Unless Trump loses the election by a landslide, given his propensity for drama, the fallout may be like bathing the devil in holy water; normal behavior for Trump.

I don’t want to get back to Trump normal.

From The Onion:

Miffed Biden Warns Trump’s Undignified Behavior Could Cost Him Cabinet Post

“Folks, what you’ve seen tonight from my friend is conduct that’s obviously beneath becoming my Treasury secretary” said the former vice president, expressing evident distaste as he turned to his debate partner, jabbed his finger in his direction, and made a forceful argument for why Trump could never become the secretary of housing in 2021 despite it dovetailing “quite nicely” with his career as a New York City real estate magnate.

How Trump Led Republicans in Making for a Fearful America

found online by Raymond

Donald Trump campaigns on white hot fear     [Image from Channel 4 News]

From Bill Formby at MadMikesAmerica:

Americans in general, and Republicans specifically, began showing their true colors immediately after 9/11/. America had been home of the brave, defenders of truth and living good lives as long as bad things were occurring elsewhere. We had stood firm against torture and mistreatment of people anywhere until then, but once it crossed the oceans and happened in our homeland everything changed.

Suddenly, torture was okay, mistreatment of people who were different from us was justified. We became as frightened as children in a terrible storm no longer the home of the brave. We became suspicious, uncertain, untrusting, and unwilling to accept anyone unlike ourselves. That was the start of divisions among our peoples into tribalism and distrust of our institutions. That allowed someone like Trump to capitalize on those uncertainties and further divide us.

Donald Trump has single-handedly brought this country closer to a second civil war, and we stood by and let him do it. No one with authority stood up and said, “Enough, this is not who we are.” Actually, there may have been a few but they were too few, too late.

Chile Abolishes Its Dictator-Era Constitution in Vote for Democracy

Chile abolishes its dictatorship-era constitution in groundbreaking vote for a more inclusive democracy     [Image from Al Jazeera]

From Jennifer M. Piscopo, Occidental College and Peter SiavelisWake Forest University
at The Moderate Voice:

One year ago, Chileans took their anger over inequality and injustice to the streets, insisting that redressing the nation’s deep structural problems would require more than reform. They said Chile would need a new constitution with more rights and better social protections.

On Oct. 25, in a popular referendum, the rest of the country overwhelmingly agreed with their diagnosis.

Chile’s referendum asked voters two questions: Should Chile convene a constitutional convention to write a brand-new constitution? If so, who should write that constitution – an assembly comprising half congressional representatives and half citizens, or an assembly comprising just citizens?

James Randi: A Warrior for Truth and Sanity – 1928-2020

James Randi debunking ‘psychic_surgery’ in televised live demonstration     [Image from Open Media Ltd, CC BY-SA 4.0]

From Infidel753:

His books on these matters, including the “powers” of Yuri Geller in which I had actually half believed for a time, played a role in forming my own convictions on the importance of confronting and exposing such popular nonsense — especially medical quacks and faith healers who do immense harm by luring sick people away from real medical treatment which could actually help them. Most vile of all, and another perennial target of Randi’s, are the cynical con artists who claim to be able to speak with the dead, and pocket hefty sums from grieving families in exchange for the phony “service”.

He went into painstaking detail to explain exactly why such drivel didn’t hold up in the real world, especially in cases where psychics and similar scammers claimed “scientific” vindication for their alleged powers — which fell apart pathetically under his no-nonsense dissection.

They Haven’t Given Up; They Switched Sides

found online by Raymond

From Vixen Strangely at Strangely Blogged:

It certainly sounds a little bit like a surrender: “We’re not going to control the pandemic” certainly would equal “letting the pandemic spread”. But the stupider half of that: “we are going to control the fact that we get vaccines, therapeutics and other mitigations” is that the Trump Administration can’t actually make science do stuff just because they want it. Of course they can put more money into research, and doctors will try things that might work better for more patients, but vaccines don’t just turn out to work brilliantly because you very much want them to.

What they believe they can control is information.

Trump Fans Literally Squeal as President Departs Florida Early Voting

found online by Raymond

Donald Trump Votes Early     [Image from CBS4 – Indianapolis]

From Tommy Christopher:

In a scene reminiscent of The Beatles’ British Invasion, supporters of President Donald Trump literally squealed as they caught a glimpse of him departing an early voting site in Florida — then loudly jeered the White House press corps that trailed him.

Supporters lined up hours ahead of time to catch a glimpse of Trump when he went to cast his vote at a West Palm Beach, Florida early voting location. Trump spoke briefly with reporters after casting his ballot, telling them “It was a very secure vote, much more secure than when you send in a ballot, I can tell you that,” a reference to his false claims about mail-in voting.

He got some laughs when he said “I voted for a guy named Trump,” getting some laughs from the crowd before departing for his next rally.

As it happens, Russia Today’s Ruptly had a live feed set up outside for the duration, and caught the intense reaction as Trump drove past supporters following his vote.
