How to Prevent Election Fraud:
Do What Most States Already Do

From Cato’s Julian Sanchez:

For election systems, that means ensuring that a voter‐verified physical ballot—an auditable paper trail—exists for every vote cast. Manual counts of a sample of those paper ballots, known as risk‐limiting audits, can then be used to confirm that the digital tallies are accurate.

Happily, many states have heeded the advice of experts in recent years, implementing routine audits and replacing direct‐recording electronic, or DRE, machines, an antiquated technology in which touch screens record choices without creating a paper ballot for the voter to inspect. Yet several states that have done virtually everything right, many at the urging of Republican officials previously seen as Trump allies, have found themselves at the center of conspiracy theories.

Pennsylvania, Georgia, and Michigan have successfully replaced their DRE machines—meaning every voter either hand‐marks a ballot or is presented with a printed paper record of their selections to verify—and implemented risk‐limiting audit programs. In Pennsylvania, this involved a Herculean effort: As recently as 2018, the majority of the state’s voters cast ballots with no paper trail. Michigan, meanwhile, had a slight head start, approving a major initiative to update its voting equipment back in 2017.

In practice, these changes make electronic “vote rigging” on the scale necessary to shift the outcome of a statewide election highly infeasible, especially when the margin of victory is tens of thousands of votes. Multiple hand recounts in Georgia, unsurprisingly, turned up no evidence of digital shenanigans.

Vlad & Donald: The Romance is Over

While love was alive     [Image from ABC News]

From PZ Myers:

The heartbreak of a breakup is worse when you get the news secondhand. Putin has parted ways with Trump.

More than a month later than most world leaders, Russia’s President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday congratulated President-elect Joe Biden for his victory in the election, a delayed recognition that could set the tone for icy relations.

“In his message Vladimir Putin wished the president-elect every success and expressed confidence that Russia and the United States, which bear special responsibility for global security and stability, can, despite their differences, effectively contribute to solving many problems and meeting challenges that the world is facing today,” the Kremlin said in a statement.

I knew all along that the relationship would never work out — it was a friendship of convenience between two spoiled, selfish people who would only stick together while they thought they could get something from one another. Oh well, Donald still has a few potential dates for the prom on Saturday.

Report from Andy Borowitz:

…according to an aide to the Majority Leader, McConnell wanted to be sure that the moon “had been officially walked on” before congratulating Armstrong.

The effect of McConnell’s comments remains unclear, however, with many congressional Republicans still refusing to acknowledge that Neil Armstrong walked on the moon.

No Republican Heroes

found online by Raymond

From Infidel753:

Whatever Republican governor, senator, or functionary you are pointing to as being one of the few “good” ones, I would counter that if that person remains a member of the Republican party, then to that extent he or she is implicitly legitimizing it in its embrace of Trump’s attacks on secular democracy and on fundamental human decency. Show me his letter of resignation from the Republican party and I’ll admit he may be a decent human being on some level. Not before.

This is all the more true since the election, as the party en masse has followed Trump into the realm of sedition. (Not “treason”, a word which is thrown around a lot but requires an actual state of war — “sedition”, meaning attempting to overthrow the legitimate authority, is the accurate word for what Trump and his enablers are doing.) People have debated whether Republicans’ support of (or at least failure to condemn) Trump’s election-stealing efforts is due to fear of Trumpanzee rage and of Trump’s anticipated power as a Republican kingmaker after his term ends, or due to them genuinely having no more respect for democracy than he does. My view is that it doesn’t matter.

Look at cases like Gabriel Sterling and Brad Raffensperger of Georgia, widely lauded for denouncing Trump’s rhetoric which has inspired death threats against Republican officials and workers who failed to subvert the election on Trump’s behalf. Where were they for the last four years of Trumpian venom denouncing the media as “enemies of the people”, encouraging armed mobs, and ultimately inspiring a plot to kidnap and murder governor Whitmer of Michigan?

Very Sad Donald Trump     [Image from NBC via CBS News]

From Reductress:

A recent op-ed article written by the U.S. published last week called on Donald Trump stop identifying himself as “President Trump”, citing that he’s not like a president-president, but rather a businessman with a history of multiple bankruptcies and a canceled reality television host that randomly ended up in the Oval Office.

Narcissist’s Playbook: Why There Likely Will be No Organized Violence

Michael Flynn at Trump rally in Washington, DC urging overturn of election     [Image from CBS Evening News]

From The Psy of Life:

Trump thinks it will all happen because he wants it to happen. Don’t believe me? Remember, he is the fellow who lost an aircraft carrier group during his first six months in office because he couldn’t distinguish the chain of command from Twitter.

Armed insurrection takes real leadership, vision, and organization. In case you hadn’t noticed, they are all in short supply at the White House. It will also take real work. When has the Ol’ Pussy Grabber ever worked at anything including grabbing a pussy?

Yes, Trump is making an authoritarian grab for illegitimate power to install himself in office. Yes, the Congressional and some state Repubes are supporting him. Yes, the Proud Boys and MAGAs are making a simpering show of “force” in the streets. But no one is doing the hard work of organizing the “movement” of white grievance into a military force.

Hell is Other Republicans

found online by Raymond

From nojo:

We must admit, we were surprised on Saturday. We were expecting others to join the Texas GOP’s call for secession — that being the logical next step in the Republican Passion Play — perhaps even a series of tweets from the top suggesting that the faithful take matters into their own hands.

Instead, they started turning on each other.

Nothing new there, as such. Trump’s been roasting Georgia’s elected Republicans awhile now for their perfidy. But with nowhere else to turn — secession curiously being unthinkable — blame still needed to be cast where it could go.

The election was still stolen. But it was stolen from the inside. The traitors are in the house.

The pleasure in this — and lord, is there a lot of pleasure — is that we’re not talking about already suspicious RINOs like Mitt Romney. We’re talking about fellow true believers whose fealty was formerly unquestionable. We’re talking about musical chairs, but with buses, and the game is not to get thrown under one.

Fox News? The Supreme Court? William Barr? State Republican election officials who wouldn’t play along with blatant disenfranchisement? Come on down! Your Greyhound is waiting.

CNN’s Jim Acosta on SCOTUS Texas Decision: ‘The Kraken Has Croaked’

found online by Raymond

From Tommy Christopher:

“Any response yet from the president or his team?” Cooper asked Acosta.

Acosta said the White House press office was referring questions to the Trump campaign, but said that “talking to a Trump advisor earlier this evening, when I asked this advisor, is this when the president gives it up and finally concedes and moves on with his life, this adviser said ‘No way.’ And earlier today, the same advisor was saying that nobody inside, just about nobody inside the president’s team of advisers thought that this was going to turn out any other way. They just did not think the Supreme Court would do this, and now we see what the president wants to do next.”

“We know obviously he is not going to give it up, but he is running out of options, obviously very quickly,” Acosta said, then added “The far right like to refer to these legal challenges as the Kraken, but the Kraken has croaked.”

“But the president may be out of options, but he’s not out of the opportunity to raise money, which seems to be at the heart of a lot of this,” Cooper said, eliciting agreement from Acosta.

Marchers for Trump Chant ‘Destroy the GOP’ and Attack Deep State Fox News

found online by Raymond

From News Corpse:

Following the Supreme Court rebuke, Trump’s cult disciples staged a “March for Trump” in Washington, D.C. on Saturday. It was intended to persuade the feeble-minded faithful that their Dear Leader had, as he tweeted in all caps, “WON THE ELECTION IN A LANDSLIDE,” if you only counted the votes that were for him. The rally was a bizarre spectacle that featured the most devoted Trump-fluffing zealots this side of Mar-a-Lago. Among them was Nick Fuentes, a former YouTuber who got the axe for repeatedly violating YouTube’s hate speech policies. At the rally he ranted that…

“At the first Million MAGA march [which fell about 995,000 short of a million] we promised that if the GOP would not do everything in their power to keep Trump in office, that we would destroy the GOP. And as we gather here in Washington D.C. for a second Million MAGA march we’re done making promises. It has to happen now. We are going to destroy the GOP.”

Whereupon the crowd vigorously took up the chant, “Destroy the GOP!” So with that goal, Trump actually has produced some measure of unity among the right and the left. Fuentes went on to specifically call out the Republican candidates for the Senate in Georgia. “The GOP wants us to hold the line,” he hollered, “and vote for RINOs like David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler.” The crowd responded again with resounding boos.

Also speaking at this event was that notorious political thinker and scammy telemarketer of crappy pillows, Mike Lindell. The MyPillow guy was equally irate at the establishment conservatives who he believes have let Trump down. Even worse, he accused Fox News of being in on the conspiracy:

“Why do you think Fox declared Arizona with only 14 percent of the vote in? They already knew what they did! They were in on it. I’m serious, they had to be in on it. You don’t know this stuff. I mean all this stuff…and you know what? It’s not just the ones that are behind this that are gonna wind up being…and they should all go to prison when they are found out. But how about the Republicans out there that didn’t back this great president and us as a people?”
