Trump has been essentially complaining for over a year that he can’t use the Justice Department and the FBI as his personal goon squad. Sessions finally pushed back.
Loyalty, like authority and purity/sanctity, ranks much higher among conservative moral values than it does among liberal ones. It is also very dangerous.
For Trump, only adoring, unquestioning loyalty will do — and don’t expect him to return the favor. But Republican politicians don’t seem to have the self-respect to stand up to that or the moral sense to recognize anything wrong with it and Republican voters seem to only want more of what Trump’s offering. It appears that this is now a defining characteristic of modern conservatism.
