"Second, the economy has a momentum all it's own."

"If an economy has a momentum all its own, why do we give politicians any credit for the economy, good or bad?"

Because things with a momentum all their own also can be acted upon. The world is gray, not conservative black.

I believe that politicians can cause a crash much more easily than they can cause a recovery. We know just about enough to see that we crashed the economy. It requires less effort to blow up a building than it does to build one.

"To continue your car analogy, I think Obama and congresses policies have forgotten to put more fuel in the tank. They are too busy trying to wash the car and make sure it appears good to be concerned whether it is still actually running."

I believe stimulus was more fuel, Mr. Paine. I think you problem is the fact that they did not make sure corporations would have more money so they could create more jobs, just like they often don't when they get more money.
Hi Heathen. Interesting question. Some very knowledgeable people argue that Presidential policies have little impact. I believe that school of thought has diminished with the 2008 brush with economic depression.

One analogy would be that my automobile has momentum, but my brakes still have an effect.
