There are reasons why Romney will not release his tax returns or tell us his tax rate increases. Maybe he should just give us his reasons and let us evaluate whether they are valid. Until then, people will make stuff up and often the stuff they make up is worse than the real answer.

Just look at religion if you don't believe me.

I won't say that Reid is a liar, but lets just say that he lives in the same neighborhood. On second thought, I will say it. Reid is a disgraceful and despicable liar. (And I am not just talking about this latest issue regarding Romney.)

If one is going to accuse someone of something, and do so on the floor of congress to boot, it would seem incumbent upon that person to at least present some proof of said charges, or state the source of such otherwise slanderous information. Otherwise it simply smacks of the basest of politics, and that is something with which Harry Reid is intimately familar.

It is indeed a sad statement when one considers that Nevada and America would have been much better off had Sharon Angle won that last election over Prince Harry.

Thank you T. Paine.

It does sort of remind me of the 1988 remark by Republican Senator Steve Symms that he kinda sorta remembered seeing a photo of a young Kitty Dukakis burning the American flag.

The analogy would be closer if the Dukakis family had a photo they refused to show anyone. Jerry Critter does have a point. In fact it may end up being THE point.

I don't understand the Romney strategy on his tax returns. If they contain something that makes him look bad, I would have thought he would want to get it out early. If not, well, what's the deal?

On the other hand, I didn't quite get the strategy of going to England and insulting the Olympics, either.

Still, we strive for bipartisanship where it's possible, right? I'm a Democrat and I completely support Governor Romney's campaign direction. He should keep his returns private just as long as he can. And he should be very public about the secrecy.

OH - I suppose I should mention that Harry Reid remains a personal hero despite his crossing of ethical lines.

This is for much the same reason as applies to Rudy Giuliani. Both showed great courage in taking on organized crime. In Harry's case it nearly got him killed, along with his wife and their daughter. That covers a lot of sins.

On the other hand, former Governor Marvin Mandel of Maryland is also a hero, for different reasons, and I think he should still be in prison. So take it for what it's worth.

As stated thus far, Romney's plan sounds nice: lower taxes and spur economic growth just by eliminating those pesky, unpopular "loopholes." No harm done. But it doesn't make sense.

If he intends to pay for the tax cuts by closing loopholes, that implies that the two are of equal value. People must already be paying, on average, the lower tax rate that he wants to establish. How does maintaining that average by lowering taxes and eliminating loopholes give anyone more money to use to spur economic growth?

Moreover, if the Tax Policy Center could ONLY make his plan work by closing all of those "loopholes" (which often have a purpose that people neglect to mention), then the details of Romney's plans are irrelevant. He can either:

1.) Propose that we close all of them, which will accomplish his goal but anger the public; or

2.) Propose that we close only some of them, which will make him a liar because the plan won't cover the tax cuts.

We should not be waiting for details at this point anyway. Romney either has a plan or he does not. If he does, then he should release it so that we have plenty of time to analyze it before the election. If he does not, then he should stop talking about it until he has one.

Thank you, Jerry.

As I understand it, it's even worse than we might think. Unless Mitt Romney does not intend to keep his promises to avoid increasing the deficit, the only mathematical possibility is to increase tax rates on the the lower 95% of the American public. That's after closing those loopholes.

Ryan, tax simplification offers other benefits including reduction of compliance costs, paperwork reduction, and easier planning for taxpayers.

Thank you Heathen.

The idea of tax simplification has more than a little appeal. Federal taxes are lower than when Obama took office, but filling out the forms still is a little like annual homework.

Problem is one voter's loophole is another's legitimate exemption. How many of those who are for simplification are also for popular complexities like home mortgage exemption or Senator Rubio's Olympic Medal exemption?

It's hard to get to everyone's ideal of a tax form on a postcard.

I understand. One should always be quick to answer the question, "When did you stop beating your wife?"

Of course when there is evidence of malfeasance, say like with the Fast and Furious scandal, then one should simply declare a seemingly irrelevant "executive priviledge" despite protestations that the executive branch had no prior knowledge of the scandal. Thank you for clarifying, Mr. Deming!

Thank you T. Paine.

I confess to being totally mystified by the Romney refusal to release his tax records. However, as a partisan Democrat I completely endorse it.

In fact, I think he should continue to vigorously defend his tax privacy. If possible, I'd like the Republican nominee to continue the argument through to November. The louder his defense the better.

Well, with the complicity of the liberal mainstream media, that is probably a winning strategy for Democrats to continue pounding Romney for his tax returns, for sure.

Now of course, they don't insist that Obama release his college transcripts, birth certificate, etc. I, personally, could care less about those things. All one had to do was read Obama's books and be horrified at what kind of president he would make. Sadly, I predicted correctly.

HR,

"tax simplification offers other benefits including reduction of compliance costs, paperwork reduction, and easier planning for taxpayers."

This is all fine, except:

1.) These advantages will do little to spur economic growth, which is the claim in question here.

2.) As Burr noted, the benefits of simplification have to be weighed against the benefits of the existing, more complex laws rather than against the concept of complexity itself.

Maybe he cannot release his tax records because he hasn't finished making them up.

Otherwise, I agree that Romney should release his tax records, as they are mostly irrelevant to his tax plan, which he promotes has perfect and unknowable, until he releases the details.

I am assuming that he immediately discredited the "joke" by listing a flaw in the math. That's what anyone would do if they could stop the humorous rumor in its tracks by doing so.

Could it be that Romney is not that far along in the process? He cannot release the details until he finishing making them up.

People need to give him time to finish his the things he begins and declares perfect in every moment of their existence (and perfect prior to their existence).
