One wonders if our British friends were more, or less offended when one of the first acts that President Obama did was to ship back the gift of the bust of that old neo-colonialist Winston Churchill to England? ...a gift that had long been displayed in the White House.

Thank you, T. Paine.

I can help you out of your wonderment.

The "gift" was a contrivance invented by conservatives. The bust was on loan. Our British friends seem to have reacted much as I would if you returned the lawn mower you had borrowed from me two years before.

See:

By the way, my loved one feels you should at least cut our lawn a few times as a minimal penance.

Given Romney's persistent gaffes, lies, and misstatements, maybe McCain's choice of Sarah Palin was a better one than picking Romney.

It would seem there are some other media sources that would suggest that some Brits, including in the diplomatic corp, were concerned with Obama's return of the bust.

Thank you T. Paine

The Washington Times, Newsbusters, and our friends, the extremely Tory Daily Telegraph are certainly sources that would escape the notice most Americans.

I can only imagine the diplomatic alarms that are ringing at the White House. Perhaps if they were to send Governor Romney to London smooth things over . . .

In politics, every act becomes significant. If a conservative president sent the bust of a liberal hero back to its foreign home for no apparent reason, I suspect that at least some liberals would be concerned. It is only fair that some conservatives react the same way when a liberal does.

The difference in this situation is that the bust was on loan, so it was presumably bound to be returned at some point. However, unless there was a particular date by which it needed to be returned or the British requested its return, Obama still made a choice to do something that he did not need to do.

Is it important? Probably not. Obama's policies speak for themselves anyway. Still, if I could see into his mind...

I beg forgiveness. I have been helping to mislead albeit unintentionally.

Like many, I accepted as fact a story that has been floating about various right wing sites for a while.

The bust of Churchill was not returned to the British embassy. It was moved to the Obama residence in order to make room in the Oval Office for a bust of Abraham Lincoln.

In fact, the National Journal published a photo during a visit by Prime Minister Cameron of President Obama showing the Prime Minister the Churchill bust.

Here are details:
