Her Heroism May Have Stopped Cops From Framing Crash Victim

found online by Raymond

From Stinque:

Salt Lake City nurse and hero of the Republic Alex Wubbels may well have prevented Utah state and Salt Lake City cops from apparently attempting to slur the character or frame the victim of a car-and-truck crash precipitated by Utah Highway Patrol’s provocation of a high-speed car chase with the loser of the hour on July 26.

Wubbels mild and plain-spoken heroism exposed her to a violent assault and unlawful detainment by an apparently intriguing police officer on July 26 apparently attempting to set up an evidentiary framework to prove that the victim of the car crash bore some or all liability for the injuries in the crash their recklessness precipitated.

Watch this video of Wubbels being assaulted at the University of Utah Hospital and know that Wubbels understood full well the mortal and physical dangers she exposed herself to, placing herself between an enraged lawless goon and something that he wanted. None of us who have not gone into combat to preserve freedom can understand the existential and spiritual horror of throwing yourself in the path of certain injury for an idea that human beings do have inalienable rights.

Defending the American Dreamers

found online by Raymond

From North Carolina pastor John Pavlovitz:

America has always been the place people could nurture dreams that found welcome nowhere else; the adoptive home for dreamers from every square inch of the planet who came as refugees from the terrible nightmares of this life.

We have been the door of radical hospitality, opened wide to a disparate world fleeing the cruelty of their geography and circumstance; those living in close proximity to injustice and violence and oppression.

The American Dream was once a thing. It once meant something. It was a declaration of possibility; the idea that this place was supposed to be refuge, rest, and level ground for a weary humanity not used to such things.

The National Minimum Wage Must Be Raised – And Soon!

found online by Raymond

From Ted McLaughlin at jobsanger:

It is just a sad fact that millions of workers in the United States make at or near the minimum wage of $7.25 an hour (about $15,080 a year). That’s barely enough to keep a single person above the poverty line, and for those with a family (two or more people) it is a poverty wage. Republicans will tell you that the minimum wage workers are just teenagers living with their parents (who don’t need a livable wage), but that is a lie. The overwhelming majority of minimum wage workers are adults — and many are single parents supporting children.

These are not lazy people. They work hard in a full-time job — and they deserve a livable wage. No one willing to work hard should have to live in poverty. And by 2020, it is estimated that about a quarter of the American workforce will be working at or very near the minimum wage.

Confederate Monuments Aren’t About Heritage

found online by Raymond

From The Intersection of Madness and Reality:

Since the Confederate flag and all Confederate monuments are about heritage and culture and have nothing to do with slavery or the treasonous acts of thousands of men. Why then aren’t there monuments and statues honoring King George of England? Why then isn’t the British flag being flown in parks and state government buildings here in the United States? Oh, that’s right, the British got their asses kicked, and we don’t fly the flag of losers. But… But.. But, aren’t the British are y’all’s cousins?

Here’s what Donald Trump said in defense of the melee in Charlottesville:

Not all of those people were neo-Nazis, believe me. Not all of those people were white supremacists by any stretch. Those people were also there because they wanted to protest the taking down of a statue, Robert E. Lee. You take a look at some of the groups and you see and you would know it if you were honest reporters, which in many cases you are not.

Many of those people were there to protest the taking down of the statue of Robert E. Lee. This week, it is Robert E. Lee and this week, Stonewall Jackson. Is it George Washington next? You have to ask yourself, where does it stop?

Where are the arguments to support the erecting of monuments to honor the lives of the many Britsh soldiers that died during the Revolutionary War? Aren’t those brave men part of your heritage and culture?

US Interests Beware: Irma Is Coming

found online by Raymond

From MadMikesAmerica:

As Texas still deals with the devastation from Harvey, another weather system churning in the Atlantic, and moving west toward the US, has some worried.

Irma, a huge Category 3 hurricane experienced “rapid intensification” from Wednesday into Thursday CNN reports. A National Hurricane Center alert issued early Friday pegs maximum sustained winds at 115mph, with higher gusts.

The storm is expected to approach the Caribbean by Tuesday or so as a monster Category 4 storm, then possibly the US—though meteorological models with wildly different scenarios show it’s too early to make any definitive predictions on where the storm will land.

Irma is a “Cape Verde” hurricane, meaning one that forms off the coast of Africa then drives across the Atlantic. What’s strengthening Irma is extremely warm water, and a lack of wind shear, which often acts to ‘shear’ off the tops of hurricanes, slowing down, and sometimes killing them.
