GOP Poised To Gut Soc Sec For Millions Of Seniors

From Ted McLaughlin at jobsanger:

…Republicans have never liked Social Security. They voted against it when it was proposed, and have been trying to get rid of it ever since. They understand that doing away with it would be very unpopular, since the program is viewed favorably by a huge percentage of the U.S. population. So they are trying to kill it bit by bit now, making the program unworkable so it will die.

The latest lie they are telling is that the program is going bankrupt, and won’t be around when younger workers today need it in the future. That’s not just a lie — it’s an outrageous and damnable lie!

  1. Yep. They are going to make grandma have to resort to eating dog food just to survive. Everyone knows that Republicans don’t love their grandparents and elderly parents and expect them to just fend for themselves.

It is always funny to watch most progressives when they are no longer in power. Their histrionics and fear-mongering play book is basically the same one that they have used for generations though.

    1. To hear some Republicans and libertarians tell it, letting people fend for themselves is just another way (if not the only way) of loving and respecting them. And Social Security is an unjustified Ponzi scheme.

We can joke about it and speculate about intentions, but any serious discussion of the subject must acknowledge the Republican proposals on the table and the consequences that they would have, whether those plans involve privatization or some benefit reduction. There’s no use in pretending that these proposals wouldn’t end up hurting anyone, especially when some already struggle to live with their current Social Security benefits.

As for histrionics and fear-mongering, that’s politics. Republicans have had no problem with prophesying the end of the family, the rule of law, capitalism, the country, etc. if gay marriage or abortion is legal, if the debt rises, if certain types of arms are banned, if businesses are made to serve people who aren’t hurting anyone, if we engage in diplomacy with some of our enemies, if we raise taxes or the minimum wage, and so on–and conservative media have had no problem with encouraging such beliefs. I hope that Democrats will be a little better about this, but we’re not off to a great start. On the other hand, Trump’s election, Cabinet choices and behavior are all good reasons for unusual concern. He is also not off to a great start.

    2. Mr. Paine, I believe that is a bit strawmanly of you. I think the idea is that Republicans don’t love your grandparents and your elderly parents and they expect them to fend for themselves. Of course they love theirs. They are not animals, after all.

Yes. Just like watching all you cons who fretted, fussed and even threatened federal agents and seized federal property because Obama was “Coming for our GUNS!!!”

Now the nuts have even gone “pizzagate”.

But Con-servatism is a virtue. We get it. IOKIYAR.

  3. Ryan, I agree that Republicans are also great at fear-mongering and histrionics too. Indeed that is seemingly a part of politics. That said, the LIBERAL mainstream media is very good at amplifying and getting out the left’s tantrums and fears in common cause with them. The times they broadcast the right’s tantrums and fears is usually to poke fun at or mock them as boorish and unenlightened.

Next, I admittedly have not looked at any of the recent GOP social security proposals, but based on their track record, every past plan they have put forth has always exempted those currently living on social security and had longer transition times that would ultimately provide for greater benefits in the long view for more Americans. I would be extremely surprised if these current iterations are any different.

Mr. Myste, it is good to see you still amongst the living, my friend! I have missed your myste-ical sense of humor!

  4. Dubya, you are correct. Indeed, President Obama proved to be a boon for gun sales in the United States under his tenure. I’ll let you figure out why.

He even helped Mexican drug cartels get weapons that killed U.S. citizens with his fast and furious program.

Yep, nothing to fear from Obama. Your liberty is safe… just in reduced amounts.

  5. LIBERAL mainstream media

Once more for effect: The BIG LIE. Corporate media serves only their bottom line. They parroted Bush and Cheney. None so blind… Facts are irrelevant to the Right, and in post-truth America. God help us.

I’ll let you figure out why.

He’s black of course. Half kidding. He NEVER advocated gun confiscation. Facts don’t matter in post truth America. The paranoid fringe knows better. Alex Jones is now head of the “Ministry of Truth”.

And you wonder why the far Right is seen as “boorish and unenlightened”?

So you’re outraged a couple Americans died while on duty. Very selective when you blame only the black guy.

Blame Obama all you want. It’s what your kind does. Do you think the killers would not have gotten weapons otherwise? Be real.

How many American lives did Bush waste in his war for crony profit and political gain? ISIS was his gift to posterity. You will blame Obama for ISIS too. No matter it was formed in 2006.

Oh, and far Right Republicans have ALWAYS opposed Social Security and Medicare. Bush wanted to privatize it. Did you miss THAT fact too? Again facts don’t matter in post-truth America. Social Security is socialism. You hate socialism, so stop pretending to care about seniors left in the cold when Wall Street controls SS.

And it’s not Gramps, but the grandkids, who have the most to lose. But hey, that’s just another irrelevant fact deviating from your specious argument.

Private profit at public cost is the MO of the corporatist Right. They will take everything from the public commons. Everything. Public natural resources. Gone to the crony capitalists. Public education, military, roads, prisons, healthcare, parks. Soon to be gone. Private education Private military. Private roads. Private healthcare. Private National Parks. Private prisons. See a pattern here? Why should you? Facts are irrelevant. Ideology demands purity.

No more Constitutional general welfare and regulation of commerce, from the “Constitutional Right”.

    It Is All. For. Sale.
