Even Us Sacrilegious Jerks
Have Limits

From PZ Myers:

I got drawn into a Twitter conversation, because I am apparently the living manifestation of sacrilege. I actually wouldn’t object to my apotheosis as the god of god-hating, but even in that job, there are rules.

It started off with Madhusudan Katti objecting to an act of sacrilege by Jenniffer Lawrence.

  1. So PZ Meyers finds it silly but offensive and unnecessary for Jennifer Lawrence to scratch her butt on sacred Hawaiian rocks because of politically correct reasons but he can denigrate the Holy Eucharist which Catholics believe to be the true presence of Christ… I guess Christianity (and Catholicism in particular) is still the one thing it is okay to be prejudiced and hateful towards these days. This is very sad indeed.

    1. He admitted as much himself, but he also provided a pretty good reason for it. He doesn’t find the Hawaiian notion of the sacred to be any less silly than other religious ones, but he does see a considerable difference between (1) the harm that the Hawaiian beliefs might cause and the harm that Catholic ones do and (2) the extent to which the two belief systems seek to impose those beliefs and rules on other people and denigrate other beliefs.

I agree with him. Additionally, I don’t have any plans to visit Hawaii and desecrate a few rocks, so I’m unlikely to face the wrath of any Hawaiians, which so far has just been condemnation anyway. I just don’t have many or strong reasons to care. I focus on Christianity because that is the most likely to affect me and other people in the US (not to mention many other places), followed by Islam. If those religions vanished, I would probably turn my attention to Hinduism because of its size and practices. I suspect that non-religious Indians focus on Hinduism instead of Christianity for the same reasons. There is nothing inconsistent or unfair about it.

In any case, there are still many conservative Christians in this country who don’t have a problem being “prejudiced and hateful” toward others and who resent others treating them the same way. It seems to you that mocking Christians is popular among liberals, but it seems to liberals that mocking everyone else is popular among conservatives. Very sad indeed.
