Get Off the Cross, Someone Else Needs the Wood (Part Infinity)

From Mock Paper Scissors:

I’ve been reading, with some fascination, smarmy Todd Starnes remarks at Y’all Qaeda’s Value Voters Summit, and a passage or two jumped out at me:

“In recent days we have seen Christian Americans hauled into court and thrown into jail, bullied and slandered by those who preach tolerance and diversity.”

But of course, the details are lacking.

  1. I know that many Christians don’t always act very… well… Christian. (and sadly that sometimes includes myself.)

That said, using the Southern Poverty Law Center as the arbiter of hate speech is not only laughable but dang ironic.

I do not hate people with same-sex attraction. Indeed many are dear friends and relatives of mine. That does not mean that I condone certain behaviors in which they may engage. By that SPLC definition, I guess I am hateful too.

I recall not too many years back when gay people were simply advocating for equal rights. Nowadays, you must not only explicitly support those rights, but you must be a champion of them or you are considered a hateful bigot.

I would rather be true to my own conscience and God then to societal pressures and trends. Those that truly know me understand and know that I am not hateful accordingly.

    1. So… you only champion certain peoples’ rights? And you dig your heels into the sand and brace against the rising tide of society and realit-, I mean, “trends”. I don’t think this makes you hateful.

Also, I’m curious, if the SPLC isn’t a good arbiter of hate speech, who or what organization would you consider better? I mean, since combatting bigotry and hate speech is kind of SPLC’s schtick, I’m really interested in why it’s laughable to you and who you look to for that?
